The money-saving expert, Martin Lewis, received backlash after he stormed an interview with Leader of the Opposition Kemi Badenoch.

It happened on Good Morning Britain earlier in the week during a discussion about student loans.

Presenter Ed Balls asked Badenoch, 46, about her plan to cut interest rates on some student loans before Lewis barged in and told the politician: ‘If you want to help the middle earning students, the most important thing is the repayment threshold should have been increased.’

In the aftermath that followed, Lewis was branded ‘rude’ and ‘difficult’, and some users online slammed his behaviour.

Lewis, 53, apologised on X afterwards, and has since reflected on his turbulent week: ‘Delighted to close the door on this week, not my finest one.

‘I can’t understand (and am envious of) how politicians can come with flak so easily, my skin is far too thin. I’ll see you all Monday. Have a good one.’

Some users responded on X with their support.

Thomas Wilson said Lewis had ‘gone up in his estimation’.

He went on: ‘You apologised for interrupting an interview (when many wouldn’t) and then engaged with said interviewee to try and tackle an issue you both clearly care about, even if you do disagree over the mechanics of how.’

Another, @schung971, said he does ‘a tremendous service for the benefit of people in the UK.’

On Monday, after the incident, Lewis addressed an apology to the Conservative party leader and went on to explain his passion: ‘Student loans are so life-impacting that I wanted to ensure the key point was made – that financially, if not psychologically, the repayment threshold is a bigger issue than the interest, […]

‘Thank you for being so courteous after the interruption – you handled it far better than I would have the other way round. I have asked my office to request a meeting, if you are available, to discuss this more calmly.’

Badenoch replied by saying she ‘loves a feisty debate’ and said she looked forward to seeing him soon.

The pair met later in the week for an ‘interesting meeting and engaged conversation.’

Badenoch joked that she had ‘returned the favour and “ambushed” Martin Lewis’ in her office.

She wrote on X: ‘Good on him for coming over to Parliament for round 2 of our debate on my plan to cut interest rates on student loans.’

Similarly, Martin said it was ‘good to talk to the opposition as most of my meets are usually with ministers.’

Good Morning Britain returns on Monday at 6am.
