Switzerland’s parliament appointed Martin Pfister as the new member of the federal council on Wednesday, succeeding Viola Amherd, who will resign at the end of this month.
Pfister narrowly defeated his fellow party member Markus Ritter, both of whom are affiliated with the centrist Die Mitte party.

Amherd, who has been serving as the Swiss defence minister, held the position of president of the federal council last year, which consists of seven members.
