Melania’s movie ranks among IMDb’s 5 worst ever — here are the other 4

It’s fair to say things haven’t been too good for Melania, the documentary film that puts the First Lady in the spotlight. Released on January 30, the Brett Ratner produced and directed movie, which follows Melania Trump in the days leading up to her husband’s second presidential inauguration, has not only faced limp ticket sales across the globe but it’s also received pretty damning reviews — which have led to it becoming one of the worst received movies in recent history. To date the film’s landed itself a mere 11% with critics on Rotten Tomatoes, with Variety calling it a ‘shameless informercial’ and The Guardian describing it as ‘pure, endless hell’. It’s not all bad news there though, holding a huge 99% rating with viewers — breaking a record for the biggest divide between expert and armchair reviews. However, it’s not done well on IMDb either, nabbing a mere 1.3 rating to become one of the five worst-rated films on the site. Which means it shares the lowest rungs of the IMDb rankings with some pretty illustrious competition. So, just what are the other four films in that top five of shame? Daniel The Wizard (2004) – 1.2 on IMDb

Daniel The Wizard (2004) Daniel ? Der Zauberer 2004 ? Comedy/Crime ? 1h 21m IMDb rating: 1.2/10 Directed by: Ulli Lommel
One of only two films to score a lower rating than Melania on IMDB, Daniel The Wizard is a 2004 German biographical musical drama film starring former German Idol contestant Daniel Kublbock as himself. The plot, such as it is, focuses on a pair of teenagers attempting to kill the singer — but of course things don’t go according to plan. The film arrived in German cinemas in August 2004, and made a swift exit after just 13,834 people went to see it. Even Kublbock – who died in 2018 – later admitted: ‘You have to say this is the worst movie of all time really.’ Decide for yourself, you can see the whole thing on YouTube.

Smolensk (2016) – 1.2 on IMDb

Smolensk (2016) IMDb rating: 1.2/10 Directed by: Antoni Krauze
Next up – and also ranking a smidge lower than Melania – is this thriller from Poland, centring around the real-life Smolensk air disaster. The tragedy occurred in April 2010, when Polish Air Force Flight 101 crashed near the titular Russia city, killing all 96 people on board, including the then president of Poland, Lech Kaczynski. The film focuses on those affected by the disaster, as well as journalist Nina who is determined to uncover the truth behind it. All of which sounds like the basis for a cracking film. But it received scathing reviews from local critics for its screenplay and acting, while IMDb reviewers criticised it for factual inaccuracies. It even went on to win seven prizes at the Polish equivalent of the bad films award show Golden Raspberries, including worst film, director, worst film duo, most embarrassing scene and most embarrassing film on an important subject. Ouch.

Foodfight! (2012) – 1.3 on IMDb

Foodfight! (2012) PG 2012 ? Family/Comedy ? 1h 30m Starz Entertainment, Viva Pictures
This one, which scores the same rating as Melania, serves as a cautionary reminder that just because something is animated it doesn’t always mean it’ll be a hit with critics. Foodfight! is set in a supermarket which becomes Marketropolis, a city inhabited by well-known brand icons after closing time. However, when an evil new brand moves in and threatens to take over the city, it’s down to cereal brand mascot Dex Dogtective and his best friend Daredevil Dan to save the day. Despite a voice cast which includes the likes of Charlie Sheen, Hilary Duff, Eva Longoria and Larry Miller, the film suffered from several production delays and missed release dates, and was critically mauled when it was finally released. IMDb viewers were similarly unimpressed, with one saying:’A true tragedy that will go down as one of, if not the, worst animation movies ever made!’ Oh dear. (Picture: Viva Pictures)

Kirk Cameron’s Saving Christmas (2014) – 1.3 on IMDb

Saving Christmas PG 2014 ? Family/Comedy ? 1h 20m
Also tying with Melania – and completing the top five – is this festive comedy, which comes to us courtesy of former Growing Pains star Kirk Cameron. The actor appears here as a fictionalised version of himself, attempting to show his also fictional brother-in-law (played by the film’s director Darren Doane) that Christmas is still a Christian holiday, in spite of its commercialisation. As well-intentioned as this might be, it also holds a crushing 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes as well as its poor IMDB rating, all of which prompted Cameron to call for his fans to ‘storm the gates of Rotten Tomatoes’ and give the film positive ratings — an attempt which backfired and led to even more criticism. Ultimately, it went on to win four prizes at the Golden Raspberry Awards, including worst film and worst actor (although missed out on the director prize to Michael Bay for Transformers: Age Of Extinction). What’s in the rest of the top 10 worst-rated films in IMDb?

While Melania may have the indignity of landing in the top five of worst-rated movies, those films are by no means the only ones to land crushingly low scores. Also among the top 10 are 2004 comedy Superbabies: Baby Geniuses 2 (1.5), 2006’s sci-fi comedy Turks In Space (1.5), the 2021 Hungarian political drama The Cost Of Deception (1.5), 2010’s notorious low-budget horror Birdemic: Shock and Terror (1.7) and bizarre 1966 horror movie Manos: The Hands Of Fate (1.7). All of which are available on various streaming platforms if you really want to see them for yourself — but don’t say you weren’t warned… (Picture: Apollomedia/Crystal Sky Communications/Hador Prods/Kobal/REX/Shutterstock)
