Move over McMuffins, McDonald’s just released its best breakfast item ever

It’s taken 23 years, but McGriddles have finally landed in the UK.

The beloved breakfast item has been a staple on the McDonald’s menu in the US since 2003, but today (March 17) marks the very first time they’ve been available across the pond.

On the menu now in the UK and Ireland, priced at £3.99 each, the product features a sausage patty, fried egg and a slice of American cheese sandwiched between two maple-flavoured griddle cakes.

But were they worth the wait? Here’s everything you need to know…

What do McGriddles taste like?

These are essentially a sausage, egg and cheese McMuffin, but with fluffy American-style pancakes in place of the English muffin.

The griddle cakes are slightly denser and thicker than your average pancake, and they have granulated maple syrup crystals baked into them, so you don’t have to worry about getting in a sticky, syrupy mess when eating.

As someone who usually drowns pancakes in syrup, I wasn’t initially convinced by the idea of the crystals, but they actually work a treat.

Before you even unwrap the McGriddle, the maple scent hits you, and it comes through wonderfully as you eat – I was surprised that I didn’t find myself wishing for extra syrup at all.

A few Maccies fans have voiced disappointment over the use of fried egg in the McGriddles, as in the States, they are made with folded, scrambled egg.

I imagine using scrambled egg would make this whole thing feel a little lighter, which would be nice, as it’s quite filling, but I didn’t really have an issue with the egg as it was.

Honestly, my only real criticism is that these are a limited-edition item, so they won’t be sticking around on the menu for long, which is tragic as it’s the best breakfast item McDonald’s has ever made, if you ask me.

It ticks all the boxes – it’s greasy, filling, and delicious. On top of that, it’s a fun mix of sweet and savoury flavours, offering something a little different from the norm.

The McMuffin will always be a crowd-pleaser, but I’d argue it’s the safe option. McGriddles won’t be for everyone, but for those who get them, they’re elite.

And I’m not the only one who feels this way.

Social media reviews have already started rolling in, with Brits hailing the breakfast item a ‘10/10’, ‘the best thing in McDonald’s history’, and saying it ‘slaps’.

However, not everyone is keen on the sweetness of it, with others calling it ‘gross’ and ‘McTerrible’.

McGriddles aren’t the only new item on the menu, as there’s also a new Cadbury Mini Egg Frappe, a Cadbury Mini Egg McFlurry, and a new Cards meal.

The meal features classics like the Big Mac, McNuggets or a McPlant, plus a pack of four collector’s cards.

The cards feature iconic Maccies characters like Ronald, Grimace, and the chain’s OG mascot, Speedee.

Several fan-favourites have also returned to the UK menu, including the Double Big Mac and Double Big Mac with Bacon, Spicy McNuggets, and the Cadbury Creme Egg McFlurry.

The new and returning items will be available nationwide from March 17 for six weeks.

Those wanting to try the new Frappe should be aware that initially it will only be available to order via the McDonald’s app. Without the app, you won’t be able to get it until March 24.
