‘Nepo baby’ Kate Hudson slammed for saying she’s ‘not that rich’ on red carpet

Hollywood star Kate Hudson has found herself at the centre of a social media storm after her comment about money went down like a lead balloon with some of those that caught it. The 46-year-old actress was walking the red carpet at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on Sunday for the Actor Awards when a chat about jewellery sparked anger from viewers at home, who wasted no time making their feelings known online, where the star was branded ‘gross’. Hudson, daughter of Hollywood stars Goldie Hawn and Bill Hudson, had arrived at the event in some serious style. She wore a cream Valentino gown with a midriff cut-out and a dramatic cape flowing from her shoulders. Around her neck and ears sparkled 80 carats of diamonds, including chunky drop earrings and a torque necklace loaned by designer Emily P. Wheeler. (Picture: Getty Images)
Speaking to Paige DeSorbo on Netflix’s live stream before the ceremony, the Song Sung Blue star was quizzed about the eye-catching jewels around her neck. She explained that she would have to hand them back after the night was over, before saying: ‘We’re not that rich!’,Daily Mail reports. It was delivered with a laugh. The internet, however, didn’t join in with that laughter… (Picture: Getty Images)
Hudson is reportedly worth a cool $80 million, which only fuelled the minor backlash. For many viewers, the idea that someone dripping in diamonds could joke about not being rich felt wildly out of touch (even if she didn’t technically own them…). Within minutes, X was awash with criticism of the Almost Famous actress, with users accusing the star of missing the mood entirely. (Picture: Getty Images)
One wrote: ‘Kate Hudson of all people talking about how she’s not that rich.’ Another X user fumed: ‘Kate Hudson is so out of touch. She made a quip talking about not being able to keep the jewels, “We’re not that rich!” Gross!’ If you followed the live online reaction, the collective eye roll and shaking of heads was unmissable. A third user added: ‘Kate Hudson very much gives “socially incapable of picking up social cues.”’ While someone else scoffed: ‘Complaining about the unpredictability of a job she was basically given by being a nepo baby… read the f****** room.’ (Picture: Getty Images)
Hudson has previously addressed the ‘nepo baby’ label head on. In 2023, New York Magazine ran its viral ‘Year of the Nepo Baby’ cover titled ‘She has her mother’s eyes and agent.’ Hudson has since said that she ‘doesn’t care about the nepo baby thing’. Reflecting on starting out in Hollywood, she insisted there was heavy scrutiny. (Picture: Getty Images)
‘There was a lot more criticism. I really felt like I had to know my s***, and be as prepared as I could be. It felt like I had to live up to something,’ she said. She added: ‘The nepotism thing, I mean… I don’t really care. I look at my kids and we’re a storytelling family. It’s definitely in our blood. People can call it whatever they want, but it’s not going to change it.’ She has also argued other fields such as business have ‘way more’ nepotism babies, saying she often wonders how some people got their jobs.
