Abuja, Nigeria – President Bola Tinubu is set to convene a crucial meeting with Nigeria’s service chiefs to address the escalating violence and insecurity across the country. The meeting follows the President’s return to Abuja after a working trip to Paris and London.
The primary focus of the meeting will be the recent surge in violent incidents, particularly in Plateau and Benue States. In the Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, recent attacks have resulted in over 50 fatalities, the destruction of more than 1,000 homes, and the displacement of approximately 20,000 residents.
President Tinubu has previously held emergency discussions with security chiefs and members of the National Assembly in response to the deteriorating security situation. The Nigerian Senate has also summoned the heads of security agencies to explain the rising death toll, especially in Plateau State.
Despite significant budgetary allocations to defense and security, the security situation remains critical, raising concerns about the effectiveness of current government strategies. The upcoming meeting is expected to prioritize improved coordination among security agencies, enhanced intelligence gathering, and the implementation of concrete strategies to protect civilians and restore peace.
