Saudi Arabia Uses Solar Lights in the Desert

Beacons have been strategically positioned near water sources, emitting visible light that makes them easily identifiable, particularly at night.

This initiative was launched by explorer Mohammad Fohaid Al-Sohaiman Al-Rammali with the goal of preventing dehydration-related fatalities in the desert, even when water is within reach.

The beacons are user-friendly, do not depend on GPS or electronic devices, and require minimal upkeep.

To date, eleven beacons have been installed, and with government backing, the project is set to grow, with plans for over 100 additional beacons in the Hail and Jouf regions.

Al-Rammali emphasized the project’s significance, stating, “This can save lives and bring peace of mind to travellers in the desert.”
