Silent Witness has been through some changes in recent years.
The long-running BBC forensic procedural has moved from London to Birmingham, characters have come and gone, and don’t get me started on the episode format.
Still, despite all this, the show remains popular with fans, with an average of five million people tuning in to watch Dr Nikki Alexander (Emilia Fox) and Jack Hodgson’s latest adventures.
However, after the explosive season 29 finale, which saw the team invetsigating woman whose body was discovered in a river, some fans have claimed Silent Witness might be one ofTV’s all-time greats.
‘Silent Witness is one of the best tv shows, ‘ wrote @NaomiSexton21 on X. ‘This season was darker, different, but what stories.’
@_chl0e05 was similarly enthusiastic, adding ‘I just want to say a massive thank you to Emilia, David, Maggie, Fran and everyone else involved in creating #SilentWitness !!! Every year it comes back with the most incredible 10 episodes, it truly is the best show on TV.’
Other fans praised the episode and specifically the BBC for tackling the relationship between Hong Kong and China.
‘This is very impressive, BBC,’ wrote Ivan Ho. ‘Credit for mentioning Jimmy Lai and the situation of Hong Kong in the newest episodes of Silent Witness!’
However, despite the praise, there were those disappointed with the finale.
‘Just seen the last 2 hrs of Silent Witness,’ fumed Oliver Goodwin. ‘The program has gone to the dogs – terrible viewing.’
It wasn’t just people on X who were disappointed, either. On reddit fans made their dissatisfaction known.
‘The last series and this have descended into stupidity,’ wrote Odin-Is-Listening. ‘ A shame because for a long while SW was eminently watchable.’
DaiBarton added: ‘It’s been struggling for a few series now. The latest one is a joke.’
Not everyone was this critical, though.
MrHotfootJackson said, ‘I’m really enjoying Francesca Mills and Maggie Steed as Kit and Harriet, great additions to the cast.’
Meanwhile, Embarrassed_Age_9296 added: ‘I thought this season was enjoyable and a return to form…
‘The majority of the episodes, in my opinion, end with open-ended reality checks about the danger and injustice of modern life rather than happily resolved plots, which is better in certain aspects as well.’
It’s worth noting as well that this season received positive reviews from professional critics.

While the BBC hasn’t officially revealed it’s believed that Silenet Witness season 30 is already in production.
According to The Radio Times, a Facebook post, shared in February, appeared to show filming was underway.
‘The caption read: Bodenham had the privilege of being chosen as the BBC drama’s ‘Silent Witness’ base camp whilst filming locally for the 30th series.’
