The Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) has entered into a strategic partnership with fintech firm Payxy to enhance market access for small and medium-scale enterprises through a new e-commerce platform known as “Oloja by Payxy”.
The initiative is designed to help Nigerian SMEs expand their customer base, improve online visibility, and strengthen digital participation in the growing e-commerce ecosystem. The collaboration was announced during the formal unveiling of the platform in Lagos.
Officials explained that the partnership is part of broader efforts to integrate more small businesses into the digital economy and address long-standing challenges around market access, which have limited the growth potential of many SMEs across the country.
SMEDAN and Payxy E-Commerce Partnership Targets Market Expansion
The partnership between SMEDAN and Payxy is focused on providing SMEs with virtual storefronts that allow them to showcase and sell products directly to customers across Nigeria and beyond.
According to SMEDAN representatives, the platform is built to simplify business operations by combining multiple digital tools into one system, including inventory management, sales tracking, and customer engagement features.
Payxy’s platform, “Oloja,” is designed to serve as a central marketplace where businesses can create online shops, manage product listings, and process transactions seamlessly through integrated payment systems.
Developers of the platform say it was created to reduce the barriers that small businesses face when trying to access online markets, particularly in areas such as logistics, visibility, and digital infrastructure.
Digital Platform to Strengthen SME Competitiveness
Stakeholders involved in the partnership say the new e-commerce system is expected to significantly improve the competitiveness of Nigerian SMEs by giving them access to tools typically available to larger enterprises.
The platform allows businesses to operate online without requiring advanced technical skills, making it easier for informal and semi-formal enterprises to transition into structured digital commerce.
The e-commerce partnership also aims to support financial inclusion by integrating payment systems that enable secure and transparent transactions for business owners and customers.
Officials noted that transaction charges will apply, but onboarding is designed to remain simple and accessible to encourage widespread adoption among small business operators.
SMEs to Benefit From Digital Transformation Drive
SMEDAN said the initiative aligns with its broader mandate of supporting MSME development through market access, capacity building, and digital integration.
The agency emphasised that improving market access remains one of the most critical challenges facing small businesses in Nigeria, particularly those operating outside major commercial centres.
By leveraging Payxy’s digital infrastructure, the partnership aims to reduce dependence on physical marketplaces and open up new opportunities for SMEs to reach national and international customers.
The partnership involving SMEDAN and Payxyis is also expected to complement ongoing government efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s digital economy and improve the ease of doing business for entrepreneurs.
Growing Push Toward Digital Marketplaces in Nigeria
Nigeria’s SME sector continues to experience rapid digital transformation, driven by increased smartphone penetration, fintech innovation, and rising demand for online shopping platforms.
Industry analysts say partnerships like this reflect a broader shift toward technology-driven solutions that help small businesses scale faster and operate more efficiently in competitive markets.
Experts also believe that structured e-commerce platforms could help address long-standing issues such as poor market visibility, limited distribution channels, and weak access to customers.
Focus Shifts to Adoption And Sustainability
While stakeholders have welcomed the initiative, attention is now shifting toward how effectively SMEs will adopt and sustain usage of the platform over time.
Challenges such as digital literacy, logistics integration, and trust in online transactions remain key factors that could influence the success of the system.
Nevertheless, SMEDAN’s partnership with Payxy is being viewed as a positive step toward strengthening SME competitiveness and expanding Nigeria’s digital marketplace ecosystem.
As rollout continues, stakeholders say the platform could play an important role in reshaping how small businesses connect with customers and grow within Nigeria’s evolving digital
