On the anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, we should pay respect to Ukrainians

Today, January 24, is the fourth anniversary of the start of conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which rages on without any end in sight.

Russia has systematically destroyed basic infrastructure including almost all Ukraine’s thermal power stations. Small wonder there are hundreds of thousands of refugees here and elsewhere in Europe.

Many former Soviet countries depend
on the hot water generated by thermal power stations to heat their homes – and heating is essential in countries where temperatures regularly plummet to -20C.

So, today I urge everybody to enjoy our almost ‘tropical’ winter temperatures and pause to think about what it might be like to live at -20C without heating, lighting, intermittent internet connectivity at best and with hot food often impossible.

The people of Ukraine deserve our eternal admiration and support until victory is achieved and occupied lands are liberated. Roger Morris, Mitcham

‘The measles outbreak is very concerning’

The measles outbreak in the London boroughs of Enfield
and Haringey (Metro, Feb 17)
is very concerning.

The reason is children are not getting vaccinated. The World Health Organisation recommends a vaccination rate of 95 per cent to stop measles. In 2024-25, the average in England was 83.7 per cent. In London it fell to 69.6 per cent.

Behind this is the spread of anti-vaccine lies and disinformation, particularly on social media. But vaccines have saved millions of lives.

It is critical parents make sure their children are vaccinated. If rates continue to fall, we will see more outbreaks of preventable diseases – and the tragic deaths of children. Mark Dawes, London

This reader is shocked but impressed by US Supreme Court tariff ruling

The recent decision by the US Supreme Court to strike down global tariffs introduced by Donald Trump (Metro, Mon) was correct but surprising. A 6-3 vote count was expected but rather as 3-6.

Sometimes people do the right thing.

Sport can be used as an analogy for many parts of life – do your best, train hard, play fairly, accept the decisions and your losses. Not everyone does these – and a few do none.

As a coach of many school sporting teams, I have tried to encourage these attributes in my players. I have never called a player I selected a ‘fool’ – language Trump has used about the judges who voted against him.

I doubt Trump ever coached one of his children’s sporting teams, for which many other children could be thankful. Dennis, via email
