Hulu and Disney Plus drama, Tell Me Lies, hailed as the most ‘toxic TV series’ around won’t return for another season – and fans are spiralling.
The three-season show, which just released the finale, centres on the ‘tumultuous and intoxicating’ relationship between Lucy Albright (Grace Van Patten) and Stephen DeMarco (Jackson White) in the eights years after they leave college.
Surrounded by an equally dysfunctional friendship group, our characters face plenty of scandalous trials and tribulations as they navigate early adulthood and all the baggage that comes with it.
Essentially, as one Rotten Tomatoes user Eric M put it, it’s ‘awful people doing awful things’.
The steamy show has impressed fans over the years, with viewers hailing it ‘psychologically gripping’, ‘underrated’ and ‘addictive’.
Its popularity has steadily built, with a loyal following going into the final season as viewers checked back in with our favourite toxic friendship group.
Unfortunately, with an ever-growing fanbase, a plethora of storylines and plenty of loose ends that need tying up, the creator abruptly announced the show would be officially ending with season three – just hours before the finale landed.
In a statement on Instagram on Monday, Meaghan Oppenheimer confirmed it hadn’t been axed but rather ‘this was always the ending my writing team and I had in mind, and we are insanely proud of it.’
Acknowledging the huge response to the series she explained they had explored if there was an ‘organic way’ to continue the story and ultimately landed on… no, in the hopes of protecting the quality of the show.
She added: ‘While it is bittersweet to leave something that has been such a happy experience, I am very grateful that we are able to tell a complete story with an intentional ending – a privilege very few shows get.’
Despite her positive words, fans are completely gutted that the show won’t be returning, especially when they had just started getting into it.
‘How does she expect me to prepare for this ending when I was already counting on the idea of getting another season? I refuse to accept it ending here I need more plsssss,’ X user cervanswittrock shared.
‘No I’m literally sobbing. So brutal to decide this,’ Mila Saka declared.
‘I would’ve let these people traumatise me for 10 seasons idc,’ Ruby shared.
‘A shame cause i would’ve sat through six more seasons of this satanic friend group terrorizing each other and me,’ Jude echoed.
Several fans pointed out that years of drama couldn’t be wrapped up in a simple season finale, although some have tried to see the silver lining.
‘I know a lot of people will be upset, but I’m kind of obsessed with the idea of the show ending with unanswered questions. It gives viewers a reason to debate & revisit it years later, asking “what if?” The show is messy, just like life, & not everything in life gets resolved,’ radhwaa reflected.
Discussing its renewal just days before, lead star Grace had told Hollywood Reporter: ‘I really believe that it could go both ways. I love the ending so much. It’s an amazing ending, if it was the end.
‘And I also think they are amazing writers, and Meaghan could think something up to continue the story. So I’d be very happy either way.’
Tell Me Lies season one and two are available to stream on BBC iPlayer. All three seasons are available to stream on Disney Plus.
