UAE: 25 Indians Face Death Sentences

On March 20, Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh disclosed this information in Parliament.

He was responding to a query in the Rajya Sabha regarding Indian nationals imprisoned abroad, including those sentenced to death.

Singh reported that there are currently 10,152 Indians incarcerated in foreign prisons, which includes individuals who are still undergoing trial.

He also provided statistics from eight countries where Indians have received death sentences but have not yet been executed.

In addition to the UAE, there are 11 cases in Indonesia, six in Qatar, three in the United States, and one each in Yemen and another unnamed nation.

The minister emphasized that the Indian government is actively supporting these prisoners. Officials from Indian embassies regularly visit them in prison and assist with legal issues, including filing appeals and mercy petitions to seek reductions or reversals of their sentences.

When asked about any executions of Indians abroad in the last five years, Singh confirmed that such events have occurred in Malaysia, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Zimbabwe.

In 2024, three Indians were executed in both Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, while one was executed in Zimbabwe. In 2023, five Indians faced execution in both Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, and one in Malaysia.
