From Cadbury’s Dream to McDonald’s McRib, there’s no heartbreak quite like a beloved snack being discontinued.

And now, fans of a nostalgic 1980s crisps will be plunged into grief, as Walkers has revealed it’s axing Tomato Snaps.

In an emotional statement, PepsiCo, who own Walkers, said: ‘Smith’s Tomato Snaps have had a great run and will always hold a special place in our history, but evolving our portfolio allows us to focus on making more of the brands and flavours people love.’

The spokesperson added that they know ‘fans of Snaps will be sad to see them go’.

Snackers will now have just a few weeks left to get their hands on packets, before they disappear for good.

The news has saddened Snaps fans, who have taken to social media to share their thoughts.

On X, user Paula Connolly, wrote: ‘Please reconsider! I’ve introduced so many people to them and now we have to find a new favourite.

Katherine Birkett shared a similar sentiment: ‘Nope — not having that… spicy tomato Snaps are an alpha-league snack for me! Please reconsider.’

Previously, X users have also dubbed them ‘top tier crisps’ and ‘elite’.

The crisps, in a curved rectangle shape with a tangy flavour, were first launched back in the 1980s.

Today, they’re produced at the Walkers factory in Lincoln, originally the Smiths Potato Crisp Factory. The factory is largely dedicated to producing Quavers, with an estimated 500 million packs made there each year.

But if you’ve got a snack-shaped hole that needs filling, fear not.

Back in August, Walkers announced they’d been quietly developing two brand new flavours for their permanent range – kind of a big deal, as the brand hasn’t added anything new to its core line-up in decades.

Shoppers are now able to get their hands on Sticky Teriyaki and Masala Chicken flavours.

Walkers claims they’ve spent the last 12 months working on ‘rigorous flavour testing’ to bring these crisps to life.
