What do you call a TV show where comedians try to make each other laugh? A smash hit for Amazon!
Okay, I’ll admit that one’s not going to win me an Edinburgh Comedy Award, but I’m not here to make you laugh, I’m here to let you know the latest on Last One Laughing.
Amazon Prime Video announced which comedians will be trying to tease a titter out of their friends and colleagues in Last One Laughing season 2 back in August last year.
At the Edinburgh TV festival, it was revealed that next year’s all-star line-up includes Alan Carr, Amy Gledhill, David Mitchell, Diane Morgan, Maisie Adam, Mel Giedroyc, Romesh Ranganathan, Sam Campbell and Gbemisola Ikumelo.
Jimmy Carr and Roisin Conaty are also back to make sure the comedians stick to the rules and eliminate anyone who dares to let out the slightest snigger.
However, what’s really interesting is that a fan favourite from the first season is set to return. The reigning LOL UK champion, Bob Mortimer, is back.
What’s Bob doing back? Well, he’s defending his crown, of course!
Who is in the Last One Laughing season 2 cast?
So, before the second season (which is brilliant, according to Metro’s own Sabirna Barr) begins, we thought we’d give you a quick refresher on these ribtickling comedians.
Alan Carr
You know him, you love him, this chatty man stole all of our hearts during his sensational turn on Celebrity Traitors.
Still, Alan Carr is one of the UK’s best comedians and presenters who fronted several TV shows, including Celebrity Ding Dong, Chatty Man, and he’s even got his own sitcom, Changing Ends.
Maisie Adam
Yorkshire-born stand-up comedian Maisie Adam made her TV debut on The Chase, of all programmes, but she’s gone on to become a huge name in the comedy world, even taking home the Best Newcomer Award at the 2018 Edinburgh Comedy Awards.
The 32-year old has appeared on shows like Mock the Week, QI, Have I Got News for You, and Richard Osman’s House of Games. Still, she’s arguably best known for winning Taskmaster season 20, after she beat Ania Magliano during a tense tie-break game in the final episode.
Sam Campbell
An Australian stand-up comedian and actor, Sam Campbell is best known for his surreal and absurdist sense of humour.
Since moving to the UK, he’s become a staple of the panel show circuit, appearing on Have I Got News For You, Never Mind the Buzzcocks, and Would I Lie To You? Again, though, his greatest TV achievement is winning season 16 of Taskmaster and asking Greg Davie if he’s a ‘child of divorce’.
Amy Gledhill
Another Edinburgh Fringe veteran (and award winner), Amy Gledhill, is one half of the double act The Delightful Sausage(along with Christopher Cantrill).
Beyond her stand-up work, Amy has also appeared in the CBBC sketch show Big Fat Like, Alma’s Not Normal, and in the Netflix series Run Away. She’s also due to appear on season 21 of the Taskmaster (I’m starting to notice a pattern here).
Mel Giedroyc
A national treasure, Mel is one half of the iconic double act Mel and Sue. It goes without saying that Mel has more TV credits to her name than some people have had hot dinners, but she’s probably best known for presenting Bake Off and her work on Eurovision.
Who will win The Last One Laughing season 2?
Our deputy TV editor shares his thoughts on which comedian is most likely to walk away the winner with some odd footballing/sports metaphor thrown in for fun…
Alan Carr – Too big a name, so will be a prime target for the others. I can see him being one of the first out.
Bob Mortimer – Sorry, Bob, I don’t think you’re going to win twice. I’m predicting a mid-table finish for the reigning champ.
Romesh Ranganathan – On paper, Romesh seems like he could go all the way, but his high profile means he’s going to be a target. Likely out by episodes 5-6.
Sam Campbell – A finalist in the making, Sam’s turn on Taskmaster proved he’s got the deadpan charm to go all the way.
Diane Morgan – A dark horse, Diane’s very funny and good at keeping herself composed. Another potential finalist.
David Mitchell – I predict David will find himself in trouble early doors; he’s too well known for his composure, so the other comedians will be gunning for him. If he doesn’t crack in eps one to three, expect to see him make it to the final four.
Maisie Adam – I could never doubt a fellow Northener. She’s going to the final 4, no doubt.
Mel Giedroyc – Mel, the majority of the Metro ents desk thinks you’re the first one out, and I hate to bow to peer pressure, but they’re probably right.
Amy Gledhill – A relative newcomer, Amy’s won Best Show at the 2024 Edinburgh Fringe, so you’d be a fool to underestimate her.
Gbemisola Ikumelo – They don’t give Baftas to just anyone, and the Famalam star is sure to give the other comedians a run for their money. A late finish for sure.
Beyond her presenting work, Mel has also appeared on Strictly Come Dancing and even trod the boards in various stage plays, including the 2018 West End Revival of the Stephen Sondheim musical Company.
Oh, and she was on Taskmaster… because of course she was.
Gbemisola Ikumelo
A Bafta-winning writer and director, Gbemisola is also an actor and comedian (does that make her a quadruple threat?) who got her start on the BBC Comedy Feeds episode Sunny D.
However, it was her work on the sketch show Famalam that brought her to national attention. Since then, she’s starred in the Amazon series A League of Their Own, the BBC show Black Ops, and she found time to work on the Office spin-off The Paper. She has not, as far as we know, appeared on Taskmaster… yet.
David Mitchell
Panel show veteran and professional ranter David Mitchell came to national attention playing Mark Corrigan on Peep Show.
Since hanging up his clean shirt, David’s become a fixture in the television word reguarly appearing on just about every show going. Despite this he has not appeared on Taskmaster.
Diane Morgan
Comedian and actor Philomena Cunk is probably better known by her oblivious alter ego Philomena Cunk. Diane began her comedy career as a double act with Joe Wilkinson.
However, it was her appearances on Charlie Brooker’s Weekly Wipe as Cunk that made her a proto-national treasure.
Since those early days, though, the character has taken on a life of its own, leading the mockumentary series Cunk on Britain, Cunk on Earth and Cunk on Life. When not playing Cunk, she’s also starred in Inside Number 9. Phoenix Nights, and leads her own series, Mandy.
That said, she’s never been on Taskmaster…
Bob Mortimer
He has been on Taskmaster.
Romesh Ranganathan
A seemingly omnipresent comedian, presenter and podcaster, it would be easier to name the shows that Romesh hasn’t worked on.
Still, he’s best known these days for his Radio 2 show and for presenting The Weakest Link as well as his stand-up work.
Oh, and he also replaced Russell Brand as the voice of Dr Nefario in the Despicable Me movies. Also, not only has he been on Taskmaster, this Tree Wizard was on the very first series.
Last One Laughing UK is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video from March 19.
