The Masked Singer ends tonight after a series full of bonkers twists and turns.
For the uninitiated, the premise of the series is pretty simple – celebrities take to the stage and belt out massive hits.
However, while doing so, they wear elaborate head-to-toe costumes and masks concealing their identities, with a panel and the public doing their best to figure out who they are before they’re eliminated.
Some of the costumes are… unique, to say the least, with this year’s offering including Moth, Can of Worms, Red Panda, Conkers, Arctic Fox, Toastie, Monkey Business, Yak, Sloth, Gargoyle, Disc Jockey, and Teabag.
Over the last seven weeks, we’ve seen The One Show’s Alex Jones, rapper Professor Green, Strictly’s Anton Du Beke, and Sex Pistols star John Lydon, all unmasked, but it all comes to an end tonight.
As we continue to decipher who is under the costumes, here’s everything we know about Toastie so far…
What clues are there for Toastie’s identity?
- Toastie belted out Aerosmith’s Walk This Way for their first performance.
- When introduced to viewers, Toastie said they don’t quit under pressure and spoke about being used to criticism, leading the panel to believe they could be an ex-talent show star.
- They also spoke about ‘grafting’, starting ‘fresh out of the bakery’ – could they have entered the entertainment industry as a child?
- A diamond was shown as one of the clues.
- Another showed someone dressed up as a clown.
- One clue showed a calendar with August 20th marked with balloons – has their birthday been revealed?
- Toastie said they were a ‘rebel with a ’cause’, suggesting they are involved in charity work
- They also spoke about wanting a ‘slice of the action’.
- We saw a glimpse of three famous names – Vernon Kay, Sara Cox and Peter Kay – who are all from Bolton, so could that be the link?
- They also have a link to the Royals, perhaps with the Royal Variety Performance?
- 2025 contestant Dressed Crab (who was unmasked as Gregory Porter), appeared in a framed photo.
- ‘Bad boys and girls won’t be served’ sign in the diner, telling customers to ‘respect.’
- ‘If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen… not that I’ve ever taken any notice of that’.
- Says toasties should be eaten in ‘intervals’ – possible theatre connection?
- Scouse accent – real or not?
- ‘East or West this toasties’ best’ – were they on Eastenders … or again the West End?
- Sign saying ‘Voted Top 10 greasy spoon breakfast in the UK’ which Mo said could be a top 10 hit
- Barry Island map – Gavin and Stacey actor?
- ‘The Stars Have Aligned’ – Wheel of Fortune extra clue
- A guitar shown with broken strings – someone with a connection to the James Morrison song?
- Mentions ‘takeaway’ – someone who has an Ant and Dec/Saturday Night Takeaway connection?
- ‘I’m the sole Toastie on this show, but I’m used to that’ – someone who performs solo? Or a play on being a ‘soul’ singer?
- ‘I’m no square, you need to fill in the blanks yourself.’
- A framed photo of Cynthia Nixon.
- A bag full of baguettes with ‘Tidiest breadmaker’ written on it.
- ‘People think toasties have a shelf life, but some things live forever. That’s the gospel truth.’
Who could Toastie on The Masked Singer be?
Mel C
A Spice Girls icon with a phenomenal voice, Melanie C is now a leading suspect for posing as a toastie.
In one of their quotes, Toastie mentioned ‘two become one’, which is also the name of a hugely popular hit by the girl band.
And, as host Joel Dommett rightly pointed out, ‘Mel C’ is a funky way to shorten ‘melted cheese’. There have been crazier links!
Jennifer Hudson
There’s no denying that the multi-hyphenate has a voice that is to die for; if Toastie is her, then she has more than proved it on The Masked Singer stage.
She also has brilliant business acumen as a singer, actress, and talk show host, which could lend itself to all the corporate clues.
Jonathan doubled down on this again later in the series, unable to shake the feeling that he knows that voice.
Emeli Sandé
Maya has thrown out Scottish singer Emeli Sande as a guess.
This came from a clown appearing in a VT, which could be a nod to her tune of the same name, released in 2012.
Fergie
Jonathan declared he was ‘blown away’ by Toastie’s ‘amazing voice’.
He was convinced the person underneath was American, suggesting Black Eyed Peas star Fergie, who also began a solo career in 2006.
Craig Phillips
While the other judges all started off by suggesting women’s names, Davina threw out Craig Phillips’ name.
She cited him being involved in charity work, convinced she’d heard a Liverpudlian accent.
Obviously, Davina has a connection to Craig, as he is known for winning the first series of Big Brother in 2000, which she famously presented on Channel 4.
Beverley Knight
‘What a voice. That was like a legend kind of voice,’ praised guest panel member Perrie Edwards as the competition began heating up.
‘There was something about intervals, which you have in the theatre, and “I’ll be your back-up”, I was thinking, Bodyguard. Maybe Beverley Knight.’
Singer Beverley took over the role of Rachel Marron (played by Whitney Houston in the original 1992 film) in the musical adaptation of The Bodyguard in 2013, which saw her nominated for various awards.
Brenda Edwards
Viewers are convinced Toastie is Brenda Edwards due to their ‘incredible soul voice’.
They also noticed how ‘Respect’ was written on a sign in the kitchen, which is the title of an Aretha Franklin tune Brenda sang for one of her X Factor live show performances.
Who has been revealed so far on Masked Singer?
- Gargoyle – Marcella Detroit
- Yak – John Lydon
- Teabag – Professor Green
- Disc Jockey – Alex Jones
- Arctic Fox – Anton Du Beke
- Monkey Business – Kate Nash
- Red Panda – Harry Hill
- Sloth – Ben Fogle
- Can of Worms – Marvin Humes
And, of course, the theatre clues fit, as Brenda has been in the West End with Chicago and toured the UK in We Will Rock You, to name just two of her stage roles.
Mo came back to this guess again after Toastie’s almost-unmasking, pointing to East West clues and the X Factor link.
‘Brenda Edwards all the way, what a voice’, wrote @kelt81 on X.
‘Gotta be Brenda Edwards’, echoed @hidido66.
Mica Paris
Davina noted she’d picked up a lot of song titles in the VT the week after Toastie’s near miss at being unmasked.
One song stood out as I Should’ve Known Better is one of Davina’s all-time favourite tracks ever,’ by Mica.
In another compelling argument, she pointed to the costume and said: ‘You are a croque monsieur and that’s from France, where is Paris? It’s the capital of France.’
Could Davina be onto something here? This guess is (ahem) so strong.
Sheridan Smith
Maya clocked that Barry Island reference and has been putting together the pieces, leading her to believe this is Sheridan Smith.
While she didn’t think it was Sheridan’s voice, the actress has had multiple West End stints and could easily be putting on an accent.
‘She can sing in any style,’ agreed Davina, with applause rumbling in the audience for this guess.
