From performing at Scarborough to seemingly using AI-generated promotional videos for his music tour, Will Smith has had quite the year.

Following that moment at the 94th Academy Awards three years ago, the Men In Black star has been on a mission to put his past controversies behind him.

His new album, Based on a True Story, which released earlier this year was his first since 2005.

But if the 57-year-old performing at Wolverhampton’s music venue The Halls wasn’t on your 2025 bingo card, his surprise appearance on the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air likely wasn’t as well.

The I Am Legend star became a household name on the comedy sitcom show, which launched him into a successful acting and music career.

Bel-Air, which is a dramatic reimagination of the show, is ‘set in modern-day America through a new, dramatic take on Will’s complicated journey from the streets of West Philadelphia to the gated mansions of Bel Air’, an official synopsis states.

Developed by Morgan Cooper, Malcolm Spellman, TJ Brady, and Rasheed Newson, the four-season drama was based on Cooper’s short fan film of the same title.

Despite the series featuring the same characters and plot lines, the show dives deep into racial tension, culture shock and the elitist world of the black bourgeoisie.

The new series hoped to bring in as many former stars from Fresh Prince as possible, but now in the final moments of the season-four finale, Smith himself – who the character is named after – meets the fictional Will Smith (I know, it’s rather confusing).

Writer, showrunner, and executive producer Carla Banks Waddles told Deadline about the challenges of getting Smith on the show, saying: ‘We’ve always wanted him on the show, and now’s the time, because there’s no more show after this. But we didn’t know if it would happen because of his schedule and everything.’

‘We found out about two weeks before that he’s going to be able to get back to the States and do it. As you can imagine, he’s got an uber-busy schedule. We had days when we had given up hope, and others where we were like, could it be? I’m just glad that it worked out.’

While the context of Smith’s inclusion in the series is being left up to interpretation, it’s believed that the future character of Will Smith is giving advice to himself in the past (again, extremely confusing).

The scene in question sees Will (Jabari Banks), Carlton (Olly Sholotan) and Jazz (Jordan L. Jones) drive to an area where you can see the city before Will heads to the University of Pennsylvania in his hometown.

But after asking his friends for a moment to take it all in himself, a stranger, who is the real Smith wearing sunglasses, shows up shows up with some words of wisdom.

He tells Will: ‘Steppin’ into the future is kinda scary, huh?’

The pair then share a chat about the young man’s future and leaving California before the younger Will tells him: ‘It sounds like you’ve got it all figured out, OG.’

Older Will responds: ‘Oh no, no, sir. Trust me, you’re going to mess some things up and do some dumb s***. But, you’re human. You’ll learn, you’ll grow.’

The scene marks a full-circle moment for Smith who began his career on the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air in 1990, with the show running for six seasons until 1996.

Reacting to the moment on social media, several viewers claimed that the moment ‘got them chocked up’, with @iesha.moore1707 saying: ‘I cried like a baby.’

Bel-Air is available to stream on Peacock.
