An ‘amazing’ BBC family drama has been hailed as being ‘worth the TV licence fee’ alone.
Inspired by the novels of celebrated Irish author Marian Keyes, The Walsh Sisters follows the highs and lows of five sisters as they navigate their 20s and 30s, facing some of the most challenging times of their life.
Set in Dublin, the drama sees Anna (Louisa Harland), Rachel (Caroline Menton), Maggie (Stefanie Preissner), Claire (Danille Galligan) and Helen (Máiréad Tyers) battle heartbreak, grief, addiction and parenthood.
Prior to the show’s release, head writer Stefanie Preissner, who also stars as the oldest sister Maggie, spoke to Metro about regretting pulling double duty.
But, commenting on social media, viewers heaped praise on the bingeable six-part series, as Sara-Jade wrote: ‘Loved loved loved loved loved Episode 1 #TheWalshSisters.’
Jo also argued that the series is ‘fantastic’ and still remains ‘as relevant now as it was 1998’, before adding: ‘Sometimes, you watch the BBC and realise the fee is worth it.’
Elsewhere on X, Lauren claimed that it is ‘making me want to re-read the books’ as Shirley added: ‘I’m obsessed… Watched whole series today, love it.’
However, while many fans loved the series, there were certainly some mixed reactions online.
Debbie commented on X: ‘Honestly not one likeable character, changed the characters from the books and so dull.’

Robert also wrote: ‘This is dire,’ as James added: ‘Every body speaks the same terrible dialogue but nobody looks even vaguely similar except they are all really unlikeable as people.’
Meanwhile, Debra highlighted how the decision to ‘clump all the sisters’ stories together’ did not work.
Finally, Charlotte wrote: ‘I adore the books, I’ve read them thousands of times and always go back to them, but this is such a hard watch. I’m so disappointed.’
This comes after all six episodes of an ‘otherworldly’ hidden gem was made available for viewers to stream.
The six-episode drama, Small Prophets, was created by Mackenzie Crook, 54, who is known for his roles in Detectorists, Pirates of the Caribbean and The Office.
The star-studded ensemble also includes Monty Python legend Sir Michael Palin, Sophie Willan (Alma’s Not Normal) and Jon Pointing (Big Boys).
Described by fans as ‘one of those rare TV series that has it all’, the sitcom has captivated audiences with his weird and wacky humour.
