Singer D4vd is the ‘target’ of a Los Angeles County grand jury investigation into the death of a 14-year-old girl who was found in the trunk of an impounded car belonging to the singer.
In September, Los Angeles police made the grim discovery after being called to inspect an impound lot following reports of a ‘foul odour coming from a vehicle.’
Court documents identify20-year-old D4vd – real name David Anthony Burke – as the ‘Target’ of the inquiry, The Independent reports.
The subpoenas were made public following an appeal in Texas by D4vd’s family, though the case details have not been publicised in California.
The filings explicitly name the singer as a suspect in the case, the first time investigators have done so.
They state that the ‘Target may be involved in having committed the following criminal offenses against the laws of the State of California, to wit: One count of Murder.’
Subpoenas included in the documents seek testimony from his mother, father, and brother, which they ‘may not refuse.’
The police found human remains in a ‘2023 Tesla Model Y in a tow yard’ belonging to D4vd and quickly launched an investigation back in September, also stating at the time that the singer was fully cooperating and had not at this point been arrested in connection to the case.
Reports later emerged that forensic experts had determined the victim was a girl aged between 14 and 15, but were waiting to release her name until her family was located and contacted. A day on, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner identified the body as 15-year-old Celeste Rivas.
She was a 13-year-old when she was reported missing in 2024 from her hometown of Lake Elsinore, about 70 miles (112 kilometers) away from Los Angeles.
The subpoena says police investigators searched the car and found a cadaver bag ‘covered with insects and a strong odor of decay’ and that ‘detectives partially unzipped the bag and observed a decomposed head and torso.’
Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office said in the documents: ‘Upon removing the cadaver bag from the front storage compartment, it was discovered the arms and legs had been severed from the body.
‘A second black bag was discovered underneath the cadaver bag. Upon opening the second bag, the dismembered body parts were discovered.’
Before Rivas was identified, the teenager was described as having wavy black hair, 5 feet 2 inches tall, and weighing 120 pounds.
She was found wearing a tube top, black leggings, a yellow metal bracelet, and metal stud earrings. She also had a tattoo on her right index finger that read: ‘Shhh…’.
The teenager’s mother told TMZ that her daughter had a boyfriend named Dave before her disappearance.
D4vd has not commented on the case, but his representatives previously said he was cooperating with police.
