David Tennant is officially set to return to the Whoniverse as the Tenth Doctor – but before Whovians get too excited, it won’t be in an on-screen capacity with the BBC.
It’s the next best thing: audio, baby. The fan favourite Time Lord will be joining the Big Finish gang for 15 new adventures across time and space.
For the avoidance of any doubt, the 54-year-old confirmed the exciting news himself, saying in an official announcement: ‘Big Finish makes it dangerously easy – you turn up, have a lovely time, and suddenly you’ve saved the universe again.’
Of the 15 audio jaunts Tennant is set to record, 12 will be released bi-monthly from the summer of 2027 – so throw a light sprinkling of water on the flames of your excitement, there’s some time to wait yet.
The remaining three episodes will form a boxset caper, in which the Doctor teams up with some of his fellow Time Lords for a crossover event.

At present, the release date for that is on a need-to-know basis (and alas, we have not been included in the circle of those needing said know).
Big Finish’s creative director Nicholas Briggs said in the announcement that the episodes will be ‘fast, funny, scary audio dramas’, with surprises to keep people hooked
He added: ‘We’re always on the lookout for David to return. He is such a busy, in-demand actor; sometimes, it’s just not possible for him to find the time to come to the studio.
‘But we’re always ready and waiting with new stories to tell and now he’s back and we’re loving every minute of it. Get ready for a rollercoaster ride during these new adventures.’
The Big Finish announcement comes after a period of fever pitch speculation over whether Tennant will be back as the Doctor in his on-screen form.
The actor appeared in a video on the official Doctor Who social media back in December, prompting fans to launch into renewed speculation that he could be returning, after his run during the 60th anniversary specials in 2023 left him down the shed in Donna Noble’s garden (otherwise known as Tardis #2).
Tennant’s wife Georgia has even fuelled said speculation, sharing of a silly message exchange between her and her husband on Instagram.
In it, Georgia sent a photo of the suitbag holding the Tenth Doctor’s customary brown suit, which he donned from 2007 to 2010, to which he replied: ‘Time to get it back on…? X’.
His wife then quipped, ‘Already taken it to Oxfam. Only way to stop you x’
