A controversial reality series that has been described as ‘car crash TV’ has been renewed for a second season.

Channel 4’s Handcuffed, hosted by Jonathan Ross, was met with mixed reviews from viewers after it aired earlier this year.

The broadcaster’s social experiment sees 18 strangers with opposing views shackled together for a £100,000 prize.

In the first series, one star of the show was handcuffed to a millionaire and asked to put his pants on.

This came after another contestant sparked outrage after praising Adolf Hitler for ‘being good with children’, before quitting the show in a rage of fury.

Now, however, Handcuffed is said to not only be getting a second series, but also a celebrity spin-off.

The first series of the show saw adult content creator Rob and a conservative housewife Charlie crowned as winners.

The line-up included some other unlikely pairings, including a plus-size model with a gym-obsessed alpha male.

According to a TV insider, producers are said to be keen for the show to continue.

What did Metro think of Handcuffed?

Our TV columnist Adam Miller shared his thoughts on the series…

‘There isn’t just an appetite for a second series of the “civilian” show, there’s also the desire to make a celebrity version,’ an insider told The Sun.

‘That’s because there are plenty of stars out there who have very contrasting views with other stars and the prospect of them being stuck with one another is just delicious.

‘Producers know it will make for great telly, though how long they will actually last being handcuffed remains to be seen.’

Reacting to the series, many fans felt that it was ‘exploitative’ of the contestants, while some argued that they loved how ‘divisive’ it is.

Writing on Reddit, one user called FireL called it the ‘closest reality TV has come to Squid Games’, before adding: ‘Proper exploitation for entertainment made possible by the desperate need some people are for money.’

Lizo also claimed that it was TV ‘that’s hit rock bottom’ and you would have to ‘pay them to watch’.

However, one user said it was ‘car crash TV at its finest’, while Dale added: ‘Great bit of drama due to the brilliant casting of the people who signed up for it.’

Meanwhile, DesignerMorning1451 argued: ‘I actually enjoyed it… if this doesn’t work out, they should rework it as a celebrity series.’

Handcuffed is available to watch on Channel 4.
