The battle between British airlines and holiday companies is heating up with the news that Jet2, the UK’s largest tour operator, will soon start flying from London Gatwick.

The Leeds-based company, whose joyful advert jingle became the most viral meme of the summer, says it has secured slots for six aircraft from March 2026.

Airbus A321neo planes will bring holidaymakers to 29 popular tourist destinations across countries such as Spain (including the Balearics and Canary Islands), Portugal, Italy, Greece, and Turkey.

Flights will also run to holiday hotspots such as Paphos in Cyprus, Pula in Croatia, Burgas in Bulgaria and Malta. Scroll down to see the list in full.

Its first flight from Gatwick – the UK’s second busiest airport, after London Heathrow – will depart for Tenerife on March 26 next year.

Jet2 is wading into stiff competition. Gatwick is the main base for easyJet, which is believed to have ’70 odd’ aircraft at the West Sussex hub. It accounted for 44% of Gatwick’s passengers last year, according to data from Flight Global.

Tui, the UK’s second-largest tour operator behind Jet2, also has a strong presence there, as does Wizz Air, which flies from Gatwick across Europe and as far as Jeddah in Saudi Arabia.

Steve Heapy, chief executive of Jet2, said: ‘For many years, our ambition has been to provide our differentiated, service-led, end-to-end product offering from London Gatwick, and we see this as a once-in-a-generation opportunity to accelerate our growth from the UK’s largest beach and city leisure destination airport.’

Gatwick will become the 14th UK airport with a Jet2 base.

The company said the move will create 300 jobs in the Sussex region, across roles including pilots, cabin crew, ground operations and engineering.

Hundreds of indirect jobs are also expected to be created.

Newly-appointed Gatwick chief Pierre-Hugues Schmit said the decision marks ‘an exciting new chapter’ for the airport.

He added: ‘Jet2’s arrival brings even more choice and flexibility to passengers across the South East and beyond, strengthening London Gatwick’s vision to be the airport for everyone, whatever your journey.

‘It is an exciting time for Jet2 to join London Gatwick following the recent Government approval for routine use of our northern runway, which will further expand connectivity and economic growth.’
