Should those being rescued from the Middle East have to pay for their flight back home?
So, the tax exiles and tourists in the Middle East expect the taxpayer to ‘rescue’ them with government-chartered flights as the fallout from Donald Trump’s assault on Iran continues (Metro, Fri).
And when they are rescued, all they can do is criticise the effort as a ‘shambles’!
It’s common now to dodge being ‘British’, live abroad in places like Dubai and avoid paying tax – but the minute things start going wrong, out comes the passport and the shout to be rescued. They should be made to pay their own fare, or the cost of the ‘rescue’ flight. Tony M, Romney Marsh
Reader says UK should distance self from Trump in way Andrew’s Epstein scandal was handed
Molly (MetroTalk, Fri) says we cannot afford to say no to Trump after Sir Keir Starmer refused his initial request to use our air bases for bombing raids on Iran.
Yes, we can. Spain have said no to Trump, Canada said no, Greenland said no, Denmark said no, even the Nobel Committee said no (which we now know was the right decision). We stripped the former Prince Andrew of all his titles for his involvement with paedophile Jeffrey Epstein and you want us to be close friends with someone who was also implicated in the files?
The world is not just the US – there are dozens of countries, very close by, wanting to be our friends.
We have Nato, we have the UN, we have the Commonwealth – the UK does not depend on the US alone. Pedro, Hammersmith

‘Women deserve better’
Serial flasher Matheus Prestes exposed himself to women on the Tube eight times over a period of four months and has been jailed for eight months.
This is not good enough. History tells us that this type of offence is just one stage for these offenders – the next stage does not bear thinking about.
His sentence should have been at least two years and, hopefully, some sort of rehabilitation to try to help stop this predator. I know people will be saying rehab does not work – if that is the case eight months off the streets is not enough.Women deserve better. Corin, London
Praise for Waitrose
Well done to Waitrose for its decision to suspend selling mackerel because over-fishing is wiping out stocks.
I have almost stopped eating fish because of the effect over-fishing and indiscriminate deep sea dredging is having on the ecosystem of the oceans.
I hope other supermarkets will follow Watrose’s lead. Julie, Bath
