Hollyoaks spoilers follow for Monday’s (March 9) episode that is now available to view on Channel 4 streaming. The episode in question will air on E4 on at 7pm.

Tony Hutchinson (Nick Pickard) was left sobbing in wife Diane’s (Alex Fletcher) arms as he learned how long beloved wife has got left to live after a devastating cancer diagnosis.

The heartwrenching scenes comes just days after Diane was told that she has Stage 4 ovarian cancer. The Dog’s landlady was experiencing stomach pains earlier this month which prompted her to make an appointment with her GP, which subsequently led the diagnosis.

With Tony away on a golf trip with brother Dom, Diane had to think about how to break the sad news to her husband upon his return.

But when Tone brought Dom back to The Dog with him, she refrained from opening up and instead, she attended a yoga session at the high school with Nancy Osborne (Jessica Fox) and Leela Dexter (Kirsty-Leigh Porter).

As the women discussed what was going on in their lives, Diane unexpectedly shared the news about her cancer, leaving both Leela and Nancy in tears.

Nancy was so devastated in fact that she had to vacate the room. Diane, meanwhile, fought tears as she revealed that the cancer has spread to her lymph nodes – and that she had yet to tell Tony, fearing what the news might do to him.

After a hug from her mates, she returned to The Dog, where she prepared to reveal all. Tony, however, was sitting in the dark, revealing that he’d sent Dom home, which left Di confused.

And then she spotted her letter from the hospital in his hand – the letter which confirmed her diagnosis. Tony explained that he’d been looking for a pen in her back when he stumbled upon the document.

‘It’s not good, is it?’, he said in emotional scenes, as Diane confirmed that she has ‘about six months’ left.

Tony broke down – his entire world shattering before him – as he held on tightly to his beloved Diane.

On taking on the story, Alex said: ‘This storyline has been a completely new challenge for me and something I’ve never explored before. Unfortunately, in some way or another many of us have been touched by cancer, I know my family certainly has this past year, so the storyline can be very relatable.

‘At times it’s been difficult to film but I’m glad that Hollyoaks are telling this story and raising awareness about ovarian cancer, with the hope that it encourages people to prioritise their health.’

Hollyoaks has worked closely with the charity Ovarian Cancer Action who have advised on the storyline throughout the writing process. According to their studies, more than 75% of affected women are diagnosed at an advanced stage of ovarian cancer.

Hollyoaks streams Mondays to Wednesdays from 6am on Channel 4’s streaming platform, or catch episodes on TV at 7pm on E4.
