Earlier this week, McDonald’s unveiled its Spring menu with a brand new Cadbury Mini Egg range launching in the UK.

But it seems that’s not all the fast food chain had up its sleeve for customers in March and April.

Maccies has just confirmed that the ‘best’ breakfast item from the US is going to be introduced across the pond after 23 years.

Yep, after years of begging, McGriddles are finally coming to restaurants across the UK and Ireland for the very first time.

What is a McGriddle?

Do you love a McMuffin and pancakes? Well, essentially, this sweet and savoury breakfast item combines the two.

It features a sausage patty, fried egg, and a slice of American cheese, sandwiched between two maple-flavoured griddle cakes.

The griddle cakes are slightly denser and thicker than your average pancake, and they have granulated maple syrup crystals baked into them, so you don’t have to worry about getting in a sticky, syrupy mess when eating.

McGriddles first launched in the US in 2003, and there are several varieties in America, including a Bacon, Egg & Cheese option. But currently, we’re just getting the one.

Eagle-eyed fans might notice there’s one big difference between the McGriddles here and in the States, though, all to do with the egg.

In the US, the breakfast item features a fluffy, folded egg, whereas here it will have a round fried egg.

Some fans have shared disappointment about this change, pointing out that it likely means the beloved breakfast bagels won’t be making a return any time soon, as they also feature a folded egg. RIP bagels.

However, the new McGriddles are bound to cause a bit of a stir here, as over on Reddit, Americans have hailed them as the ‘best’ breakfast item, their ‘favourite’ breakfast sandwich, and ‘unique’.

Others said they ‘slap’, ‘are delicious’, and are ‘the best thing ever’, which is pretty high praise.

Will they live up to the hype? We’ll have to wait and see…

When are McGriddles launching in the UK?

McGriddles will arrive on the UK menu from March 17, and as it’s a breakfast item, you’ll only be able to order it in the morning between opening and 11 am sharp.

It’s not yet known how long they’ll be sticking around for, but McDonald’s has warned that ‘once it’s gone, it’s gone’.

Most likely, it will be around for about six weeks, as this is how long the chain usually keeps limited-edition items on the menu.

And for those that are curious, it’ll cost £3.99, making it cheaper than a Sausage & Egg McMuffin, which is priced over £4 these days.

Those thinking of ordering one might like to know that customers who spend £15 or more on breakfast items via McDelivery between Friday, March 13 and Sunday, March 29 will receive £3 off their total transaction.

What else is joining the McDonald’s UK menu in March?

As well as McGriddles, March 17 will see the launch of a new Cadbury Mini Egg Frappe and a Cadbury Mini Egg McFlurry.

Plus new Cards Meals will be arriving, featuring classics like the Big Mac, McNuggets or a McPlant, plus a pack of four collectors cards. The cards feature iconic Maccies characters like Ronald, Grimace, and the chain’s OG mascot, Speedee.

Several fan-favourites will also be returning to the UK menu, including the Double Big Mac and Double Big Mac with Bacon, Spicy McNuggets, and the Cadbury Creme Egg McFlurry.

But it’s a case of in with the new and out with the old, as when these items join the menu, we’ll have to say goodbye to the current batch of limited-edition products, including the popular Friends Meal.

Monica’s Marina Sauce, the Philly Cheese Stack, Pizza Mozzarella Dippers, the Milkybar Crispy Cookie McFlurry, the Brownie Pie, Munchies Vanilla Cheesecake McFlurry, the Chicken Big Mac, and the Doughnut Crumble Latte will also be leaving the menu.

How do McDonald's new Easter items taste?

Ahead of the Cadbury Mini Egg launches, I was invited down to McDonald’s HQ in London for an early try of them.

I started with the new Cadbury Mini Egg McFlurry, and I have to say I was a little disappointed with its appearance, which is giving sludgy mess – but thankfully, it tastes much better than it looks.

You can’t really go wrong with the combo of ice cream, chocolate sauce and Mini Eggs, can you?

It’s nostalgic, classic and truly feels like Easter in a dessert.

The Frappe isn’t anything groundbreaking in terms of flavour combinations, but it’s bound to be the drink of dreams for Mini Egg fans, and I can see customers going wild for it.

Visually, it’s much nicer to look at than the McFlurry. I’d argue it’s actually quite aesthetic, as the pink and yellow in the Mini Egg dust sprinkled on top really pop against the whipped cream.

The drink itself reminded me of a Nesquik chocolate milkshake, but it’s worth noting that it’s a tad grainy due to the crushed mini Eggs mixed through the base.

If you like a smooth drink, this might not be the one for you, but personally, I enjoyed it.
