Netflix is no longer compatible with an estimated 87 million devices as of today, Monday March 2, it’s been reported.

The change has affected those who use Sony’s PlayStation 3 (PS3) to binge their favourite shows via the streaming platform.

Some users previously reported seeing a message appear on their devices stating: ‘Unfortunately, Netflix will no longer be available on this device after March 2, 2026. Visit netflix.com/compatibledevices to see a list of supported devices.’

Netflix hasn’t made an official announcement, but it comes after the platform ended support for first-generation Amazon Fire TV devices.

Now, PS3s are taking the hit as the final seventh-generation console sees its official support phased out.

Reacting to the change coming into effect on Monday, Reddit user koteshima2nd wrote: ‘I’m sure there are still some PS3 owners out there religiously using Netflix on PS3 for personal reasons. Hats off to them.’

‘Goodbye PS3 Netflix,’ AStupidguy2341 commented, while KingOvDownvotes added: ‘PS3 era was my favourite.’

Users relying on these older models will have to switch up how they continue watching episodes of Bridgerton, or rewatch seasons of Stranger Things.

The PS3 may have stopped production in 2017, but around 87.5 million units were sold worldwide, meaning that a huge number of people could be affected by the changes.

Most modern smart TVs are compatible with the streamer, and many come with the Netflix app included.

It’s also possible to use mobile phones, tablets, computers, and streaming sticks to access the paid-for subscription service.

However, as devices get older and become less widely used, they may also be at risk of becoming incompatible with the platform.

With software developing fast, older systems can find it increasingly difficult to house such complicated and advanced applications.

In 2023, Gaming Bible reported that PS3 still hosted around two million active monthly users.

It’s not necessarily just that people haven’t got round to updating their technology, but some gamers still enjoy using the old consoles.

On Reddit, there were users praising Netflix for supporting the device for so long.

Theemptyqueue said: ’20 years of support is outstanding, honestly.’ While others like nighttaco lamented: ‘Nooo, I still use this.’ LiteratureMindless71 saw it as a ‘time to modernise’.

This isn’t the only change Netflix has made in recent months.

In December last year, the platform cut the feature allowing most users to cast from their phone to a bigger screen.

The handy feature allowed for a better viewing experience and was a useful way to share programmes and films with family and friends.

A version of this article was originally published on February 24.

When contacted by Metro, Netflix declined to comment. Metro also contacted Sony for comment.
