A Portsmouth supporter has died following a medical emergency outside Fratton Park in the build-up to the club’s Championship clash with West Brom.
Pompey ran out 3-0 victors in a one-sided contest on the south coast, with Conor Chaplin, Millenic Alli and Ebou Adams hitting the target in a battle between 20th and 21st.
But the tragic events that occurred prior to kick-off outside the stadium have since overshadowed what was a fine win for John Mousinho’s men.
In a statement on their official website, Portsmouth passed on their ‘deepest condolences’ to the fan and their loved ones while thanking medical staff at the scene for their efforts.
‘Portsmouth Football Club are devastated to announce that a Pompey fan has passed away following a medical emergency at Fratton Park on Saturday afternoon,’ the club statement read.
‘The incident happened just outside the stadium before the game and despite the efforts of emergency services, they tragically died.
‘The next of kin have been informed and our deepest condolences go out to the supporter’s family and loved ones.

‘We are grateful for the efforts of South Central Ambulance Service and St John Ambulance, as well as club staff and stewards, who worked valiantly to try to save the supporter’s life.’
The statement prompted further messages of love and support for the unnamed fan and their family across social media, with one user on X tweeting: ‘My thoughts are with the family and friends at this sad time. RIP.’
‘Condolences to the man’s loved ones,’ another wrote.
Portsmouth will be expected to pay tribute to the supporter in question when they return to action at home to Ipswich Town on Tuesday night.
It’s the second time in under two months that tragedy has struck during a Championship match involving Portsmouth.
In December, a Charlton Athletic fan fell ill in the home end at The Valley during the side’s clash with Portsmouth and later died.
‘The club are devastated to report that a Charlton Athletic supporter has died following a medical emergency during today’s game at The Valley against Portsmouth,’ a statement from Charlton read at the time.
‘The match was halted in the 12th minute while the supporter received treatment and was subsequently postponed.
‘The club would like to thank the Charlton staff and first responders who did everything they could, but sadly the supporter later passed away in hospital.
‘The club are grateful to supporters in attendance and the Portsmouth players and staff for their patience and understanding as this tragedy unfolded.
‘Everyone at the club sends their heartfelt condolences to the supporter’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.’
