At this time of year, there’s nothing we want more than to sit down of an evening, put on a good movie, and crack into a packet of Mini Eggs.
Cadbury has long been the go-to, but amid the cost-of-living crisis, our favourite Easter treat has started to feel like more of a luxury item than a cheap pick-me-up.
In many UK supermarkets, tiny packets are going for around £2, while bigger 1kg sharing bags are being flogged for as much as £17 online.
So, at Metro, we thought it was time to see if any own-brand versions of the classic chocolate could make for a tasty alternative, in a bid to save a few pennies.
And the results of our taste test might surprise you…
How we conducted the taste test
The Metro team conducted a blind taste test of Mini Eggs, sampling treats from M&S, Morrisons, Waitrose, Aldi, and Lidl, as well as branded versions by Cadbury and Poppets.
We scored each of the eggs across five different categories, including appearance, texture, size, value for money, and taste, giving each product a potential maximum score of 100.
The price of each egg was revealed at the end of the taste test to ensure no one was swayed by this when giving other rankings.
Who won Metro’s Mini Egg taste test?
Marks & Spencer’s Speckled Eggs just managed to secure a victory over Cadbury’s iconic version, winning by one point.
The M&S product costs £1.75 for a 90g bag and scored an impressive 80 out of 100 across all of the categories.
These eggs initially divided the team, as they’re quite a bit bigger than the usual ones, but they rated highly for overall taste, garnering 18 points out of a possible 20 due to the ‘creamy’ and ‘indulgent’ chocolate, which people agreed seemed ‘high quality’.

The appearance of the Speckled Eggs was praised for being ‘bright’ and ‘beautiful’, with one reviewer saying: ‘Everything about this screamed luxe – the size, the sheen, the colours, and the rich, creamy taste.
‘It didn’t exactly feel like a Mini Egg, but I didn’t mind because it was so damn tasty.’
So, while M&S might not offer the most classic Mini Egg experience, they definitely brought something special to the table, and we heartily recommend giving these a try.
As for Cadbury, the OG Mini Eggs followed hot on the heels of M&S, just one point behind, scoring 79 out of 100.
The highest marks for these came for appearance, with an almost perfect 19 out of 20 rating, due to the pretty pastel hue of the eggs, the even speckling design and the consistent shape and size.
They lost points, however, in the value for money category, as they’re actually 25p more expensive than the M&S ones, and you get slightly less for your money in the 74g packet.
Currently in stores such as Morrisons and Tesco, a 74g packet of Cadbury Mini Eggs costs £2, and our team only gave them nine points out of a possible 20 for the price, which was branded ‘unbelievable’, while M&S, in comparison, was hailed as giving ‘absolute bang for your buck for such tasty eggs’.
Lidl’s Mister Choc Mini Eggs (£1.15 for 80g) came in third place, with an overall score of 64 out of 100, being praised for their ‘smooth shell’, ‘nice size’, and ‘vivid colours’.
They missed out on a higher spot due to the taste, which the panel found ‘overly sweet’ and ‘a little artificial’.
Poppets Poppeggs (£1.25 for 80g at Iceland) were the solid middle-ground option with a score of 60.5. Testers enjoyed their ‘good crunch’, but not everyone was a fan of the chocolate, with some claiming it had a slightly ‘bitter, almost medicinal’ flavour to it.
The Crackin’ Up Mini Chocolate Speckled Eggs from Morrisons (usually £1.25 for 80g, currently on offer for £1) came in fifth place, scoring 60 out of 100, while Aldi’s Choceur Mini Chocolate Eggs (usually £1.14 for 74g, currently on offer for 99p) were in sixth place, earning 55.5 out of 100.
At the bottom of the rankings were the Waitrose Milk Chocolate Mini Eggs (£4 for 200g), which took the concept of ‘mini eggs’ to a whole new level.
The size is really what lets these down, with the team giving them just four points out of a possible 20, deeming them too small.Reviewers felt they were less of a Mini Egg, and more comparable to Smarties.
That said, they still garnered 13 out of 20 for the taste, with one comment reading: ‘Love the flavour of these, and it’s a nice chocolate, but they’re just too small – I’d end up eating them all in one sitting, which isn’t ideal.’
