The prestigious North London suburb of St John’s Wood boasts some of the capital’s most expensive properties, but estate agents say that it’s largely overlooked.
Now, the neighbourhood is reportedly set to welcome a new high-profile resident. Liam Gallagher, frontman of Oasis, is rumoured to have purchased a Grade-II listed mansion in the area, according to a source who spoke to the London Evening Standard.
Gallagher’s potential purchase marks somewhat of a homecoming, as both he and his brother Noel have historic ties to St John’s Wood.
The latter famously bought a well-known townhouse in nearby Belsize Park in 1997, dubbed ‘Supernova Heights’, further cementing the area’s appeal to prominent figures in the music industry.
And they’re not the only celebs to reside in the area, as St John’s Wood has long drawn an eclectic group of distinguished residents from the entertainment industry.
Sir Paul McCartney, for example, has lived in the suburb since the 1960s, residing near the legendary Abbey Road Studios.
And pop superstar Rihanna was a notable resident, reportedly renting an eight-bedroom mansion in the area for £18,000 per week from 2018 until 2020.
The property was subsequently sold for £27.5 million, reflecting the luxury nature of the North London location.
And the suburb’s reputation extends beyond musicians, having also been home to internationally recognised actor Damian Lewis.
The Emmy and Golden Globe winner grew up locally before establishing a successful career in Hollywood, adding to the area’s distinguished roster of celebrity residents.

Beyond its celebrity residents, St John’s Wood boasts a wealth of cultural and recreational attractions that enhance its allure.
Luxury real estate agent Beauchamp Estates call it a ‘hidden gem’. They say: ‘While it is one of London’s most exclusive neighbourhoods, it remains relatively unknown (compared to its more famous neighbours), with even some seasoned investors skipping over it. Because of this, it retains a certain mystique.’
The famous Abbey Road Studios and its zebra crossing are globally recognised thanks to The Beatles’ iconic album cover, and visitors flock here to recreate the famous walk and take photos at the legendary recording studio.
Meanwhile, Lord’s Cricket Ground is known as the ‘home of cricket’, and is a historic venue offering guided tours, sporting events, and a unique glimpse into Britain’s proud sporting heritage.
Primrose Hill, offering spectacular London skyline views, is nearby, while St John’s Wood itself maintains tranquil green spaces ideal for walking, picnicking, and outdoor activities.
Regent’s Park is just adjacent, home to London Zoo and boating lakes.
The high street in St John’s Wood features an eclectic mix of boutique stores, high-end fashion outlets, artisanal delis, and speciality shops, catering to both locals and visitors seeking quality and exclusivity.
The area’s cafés and bakeries serve as perfect spots for leisure brunches or quick coffees.
Property prices in St John’s Wood
Unsurprisingly, given its celebrity residents, house prices in St John’s Wood are on the upper end of the scale.
According to Rightmove, average property prices in the area over the past year were £1,671,143 — well above the London average of £661,329.
The majority of properties sold in St John’s Wood during the last year were flats, selling for an average price of £919,374. Terraced properties sold for an average of £2,545,458, with detached properties fetching £11,932,812.
However, house prices are rapidly decreasing in the area, along with many other luxury spots in the capital, with average prices in St John’s Wood 6% down on the previous year and 14% down on the 2022 peak of £1,933,878.
