I know what you’re thinking. It’s Easter Sunday, and you’re bored.
Well, you’re in luck, dear reader, because Metro knows the cure for boredom, and it’s called television.
Take, for example, the psychological thriller The Devil’s Hour, which just arrived on ITVX.
Created by Tom Moran, this mind-bending series follows Lucy (Jessica Raine), a woman who experiences hellish nightmares at 3:33am each night.
Why 3:33am?
Well, because that’s the Devil’s hour and is a time associated with the supernatural as well as all sorts of ghosts, goblins, and grimblies.
To make matters worse, Lucy isn’t the only person experiencing strange goings on. Her young son sees things no one else does, while her mother talks to empty chairs.
However, as eerie as her life is, Lucy’s world is flipped upside down when she’s connected to a series of murders seemingly committed by the mysterious Gideon Shepherd (Peter Capaldi).
Boasting an impressive 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, the show dazzled critics when it was released.
Metro’s own Ruth Lawes even went so far as to call it the ‘best British horror series in decades’ in her four-star review.
The Guardian were similarly effusive in their praise, calling it ‘brilliantly done’.
It’s not just professional critics who love the show. Normal fans have shared their thoughts on IMDb, and they’re loving The Devil’s Hour.
Darkmomo-81831 said it was ‘everything [they] want in a thriller’ while Rosemaryandthyme added she ‘can’t stop thinking about it’ since finishing it.
What the critics and fans both agree on, however, is that the acting is what makes this series so incredible, most notably Jessica and Peter, who get the lion’s share of the praise.
‘While everyone obsesses over big-budget franchises, The Devil’s Hour quietly delivers smarter storytelling and a darker emotional punch,’ wrote ArsenalAxis on Reddit.
‘Capaldi’s portrayal of Gideon is the kind of layered, unsettling performance that sticks with you long after the credits roll. It’s eerie, thought-provoking, and far more inventive than most of what’s on TV right now- a true hidden gem that deserves mainstream love.’
Salt_Box7072 added ‘for my money it was Jessica Raine who stole the show and made the whole thing so watchable.’
You don’t have to trust these people, though; you can make your own mind up by watching the show yourself this weekend.
The Devil’s Hour will be available to stream on ITVX from April 5 2026.
