Coronation Street fans have been known to long for the ‘good old days’ of the ITV soap, and it looks like they’re set to be pleased, as one star has promised a return to the golden age of Corrie.
Catherine Tyldesley recently returned to her role as Eva Price, and her first episode back was hailed by fans as one of the ‘best in years’.
The episode saw Eva and new beau Ben Driscoll (Aaron McCusker) take over the Rovers and immediately throw a lock-in to celebrate.
However, Eva’s dreams were crushed when mother-in-law Maggie Driscoll (Pauline McLynn) arrived and announced she was moving in, as she was the real owner of the pub.
It transpired that Ben had struggled to pull together the cash to complete the sale, so had asked Maggie to help him out.
Fans were quick to pick up on the focus on community and humour, which was a big part of the ‘old school Corrie’ feel – something that Cath has promised a lot more of.
‘What Kate Brooks our wonderful producer has done is bring back an old school Corrie feeling,’ she told the Daily Mail.
‘She is super passionate about that and she is a big Corrie fan and that was one of the reasons I agreed to come back, was because of her vision for the show and where she wanted to take it.
‘Finding those character led storylines, with strong women at the forefront is something Corrie has always done so well and that the audience seem to crave, and I think Kate is feeding that.
‘It’s important to move with the times but also know who your target audience is, everyone kept saying they want want that “old school Corrie vibe, we want it to be character led” and I feel the show is nailing that.’
There are set to be more changes ahead for the ITV soap in the new year, as it cuts down to five episodes a week amid budget cuts.
Metro previously reported that the move would lead to job losses, with redundancies being made.
The schedule changes, which will also affect Emmerdale, will be kicked off by a major crossover event in the new year, which will see characters from both shows interact for the first time.
So far, we know that Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller) and DS Lisa Swain (Vicky Myers) will be involved, though details of the storylines are being kept tightly under wraps.
