Nick Reiner entered a plea of not guilty on Monday to two charges of first-degree murder over the deaths of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner.
The plea was submitted by his lawyer, Deputy Public Defender Kimberly Greene, while Reiner stood inside a glassed-in holding area in a crowded Los Angeles courtroom.
The 32-year-old — one of Rob Reiner’s four children — has remained in custody without bail since his arrest, which came just hours after the filmmaker and his wife of 36 years were discovered fatally stabbed at their Brentwood home on December 14.
During the hearing, Reiner appeared with a shaved head and dressed in brown jail-issued clothing.
He exchanged a few quiet words with his attorney before proceedings began and spoke only once, responding ‘yes’ to a question from the judge.
Unlike at his initial court appearance in December, he was not wearing a suicide-prevention smock.
Deputy District Attorney Habib Balian said his office is still awaiting a full autopsy report in the case, but all other evidence has been turned over to the defense.
The deaths of Hollywood director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer have left the world shocked with each new development.
The When Harry Met Sally filmmaker, 78, and his wife, 70, were found dead in their Los Angeles home on December 14.
It was reported that their daughter Romy found her parents dead with stab wounds in their Brentwood mansion and alerted the police shortly before calling actor Billy Crystal, who ‘raced’ to the scene to ‘say his goodbyes’.
Soon after, the couple’s son Nick was arrested in connection with their deaths and was subsequently charged with murdering his parents.
Their cause of death was later revealed by the Los Angeles County Department Medical Examiner as death from ‘multiple sharp force injuries’.
