Sarah Sugden (Katie Hill) and Liam Cavanagh (Jonny McPherson) are the only two people who know about Cain Dingle’s (Jeff Hordley) cancer diagnosis in Emmerdale, and are both determined to support him.
However, with Cain reluctant to open up, being there for him is becoming increasingly difficult.
Cain received the news that he has prostate cancer a few weeks ago. He currently feels as though he cannot tell wife Moira Dingle (Natalie J Robb), as she’s currently behind bars after being charged with double murder.
Sarah only knows about her Granddad’s health issue because she sensed that something wasn’t quite right with him after his trip to the hospital. Cain’s best friend Liam has provided him with information about his upcoming operation of which he’s been quietly grateful for, but actually speaking about how terrified he is has been something Cain cannot bring himself to do.
Instead, he’s distracted himself with the constant chaos up at the farm. Cain is running Butler’s and the garage right now, and looking after Kyle and Isaac (Huey Quinn and Bobby Dunsmuir).
Sarah knows Cain is dealing with a lot, and spent today’s episode trying to once again encourage him to accept her help. Sarah was diagnosed with a type of cancer herself when she was a child, and has been through a lot of situations in her life that’s seen her worrying about yet another hospital appointment.
Sarah has learnt that leaning on other people for support in the middle of an illness is hugely beneficial. After discovering that Cain no longer has life insurance, Sarah grew frustrated when he berated himself for being so useless.
Believing he needed something completely different to think about, Sarah told Cain that they should steal some high-end cars. In Sarah’s eyes it was a perfect solution – the cars would give Cain money to keep the farm running, and the thrill of stealing the vehicles would provide him with a distraction.
Everything Sarah has done for Cain since learning of his diagnosis has been out of a place of love and care. When Cain responded to the idea by telling Sarah to leave him alone, she was frustrated.
Sarah told Cain that if he’s not prepared to fight for his family, they might be better off without him.
Harsh words – but will this be enough for Cain to start accepting help from others?
