U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer remarked on Wednesday that the European Union’s response to President Donald Trump’s enhanced tariffs on steel and aluminum indicates that the bloc’s trade policies are misaligned with current realities.
In one of his few public comments since assuming office in late February, Greer noted that the EU’s retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods valued at 26 billion euros ($28 billion) contradict the bloc’s stance against U.S. initiatives aimed at addressing global overcapacity in the metals sector.

“The EU’s punitive measures completely overlook the national security needs of the United States—and, in fact, international security as a whole—and serve as yet another sign that the EU’s trade and economic strategies are disconnected from reality,” Greer stated.
