Abba Abubakar Aliyu, the Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), is spearheading a significant initiative to enhance energy access across Nigeria through innovative projects. A notable advancement in rural electrification is the launch of the Africa Mini-grid Program (AMP) in Namu Village, Qua’an Pan, Plateau State, in partnership with the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). This initiative represents a crucial step towards delivering sustainable and affordable electricity to underserved populations.
The AMP project will establish 23 mini-grids across six geopolitical zones, with capacities between 30kWp and 200kWp. It is expected to provide power to over 70,000 Nigerians, facilitating more than 600 productive use connections and over 375 social connections, thereby significantly enhancing economic activities in rural regions. Eighteen renewable energy developers have been granted a total of $5.91 million, paving the way for swift implementation and substantial impact.
Under Aliyu’s guidance, the REA is also intensifying its collaborations to promote renewable energy solutions. A groundbreaking partnership with Australian firm Okra Solar and five Nigerian Renewable Energy Service Companies (RESCOs) aims to electrify 100,000 off-grid households, benefiting nearly half a million individuals. By employing advanced mesh-grid technology, this initiative will establish a decentralized power network that is resilient, efficient, and specifically designed for remote communities.
In addition to rural electrification, Aliyu is directing the REA towards impactful projects that support Nigeria’s overarching clean energy objectives. In a strategic alliance with Oando Clean Energy, the REA has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for a 1.2-gigawatt (GW) solar project. This ambitious initiative aims to supply electricity to millions, decrease dependence on fossil fuels, and aid Nigeria in achieving its energy transition goals.
