New Lego Smart Play Star Wars sets add Millennium Falcon and a talking C-3PO

Smart Play is a new force for Lego Star Wars (Lego)

More Lego Star Wars sets have been unveiled that are compatible with Smart Play bricks, including a landspeeder and AT-ST walker.

It’s less than a month since Lego unveiled their new Smart Play technology, that they hope will revolutionise the construction toy world, with special high-tech bricks that respond to how you play with them and what other Smart Play toys are nearby.

The initial three sets all came with the Smart Bricks necessary for the electronic features to work but the second wave gives a clearer idea of how the theme is going to work in the future, as none of them includes a Smart Brick.

Instead, you just reuse a Smart Brick from one of the other sets, much like how you only have to buy the Super Mario interactive figures, which use similar tech, once and then the expansion packs can be bought separately at a relatively lower price.

To recap, the Smart bricks can sense motion and direction, so if they’re place inside, say, a spaceship, they can make changing engine noises as you move it around. But the bricks also react to different colours interacting with them, so, for example, the laser cannons on the ships are activated by moving a red Lego brick in front of the sensors.

Move a green hammer near the brick and it knows you’re trying to repair it or use a blue object and it realises you’re trying to refuel. The brick also reacts to Smart tags – special Lego bricks you can place on any model – and Smart minifigures, making the noise of characters talking, playing snippets of music, or making lightsaber noises.

The five new sets were revealed at the Nuremberg Toy Fair on Tuesday and were introduced by C-3PO actor Anthony Daniels, with his character being one of several to get a new Smart Play minifigure.

Lego Smart Play Luke’s Landspeeder set
The Landspeeder has plenty of Smart functionality (Lego)

Luke’s Landspeeder – £34.99

The cheapest set so far comes with the landspeeder itself, a little desert hut, and a Luke Skywalker Smart minifigure. You also get ordinary minifigures of a Jawa and a Gonk droid, with the emphasis of the set being on repairing and refuelling vehicles.

Lego Smart Play AT-ST Attack on Endor set
The AT-ST is one of the more realistic designs (Lego)

AT-ST Attack on Endor – £44.99

So far, all of the sets have been based on the original Star Wars trilogy and this one recreates the battle on the forest moon of Endor, with a scout walker and a speeder bike. It includes a Smart minifigure for Wicket the Ewok, plus normal minifigures for a scout trooper and AT-ST driver. The two Smart tags included make noises for the two vehicles and their laser cannons.

Lego Smart Play Yoda’s Hut and Jedi Training set
The balancing game is still inspired by the movies (Lego)

Yoda’s Hut and Jedi Training – £59.99

Not all of the sets feature spaceships or vehicles, as this one lets you recreate Yoda’s hut on the planet of Dagobah. You can also play a balancing game with the Lego device you build outside, that challenges you to add to the various different objects Luke is lifting with the Force. The set has two Smart minifigures, for Luke and Yoda, and two Smart tags for both Force training and doing some cooking.

Lego Smart Play Mos Eisley Cantina set
Star Wars karaoke is definitely a new trick (Lego)

Mos Eisley Cantina – £69.99

The wretched hive of scum and villainy makes for a great Lego playset, with Smart minifigures of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Greedo, plus three Smart tags for simulating karaoke, mixing drinks, and the included Dewback creature. The karaoke works by working the lever, to make the characters move and dance, including ordinary minifigures of two Bith musicians and a sandtrooper.

Lego Smart Play Millennium Falcon being built
There’s plenty of interior detail (Lego)

Millennium Falcon – £89.99

The biggest of the new sets recreates the most famous hunk of junk in the galaxy and includes Smart minifigure of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Chewbacca, and C-3PO. You also get four smart tags that can simulate the shooter laser cannon, going into hyperspace, playing holochess, or Luke practising with his lightsaber.

Like the initial three sets, these five additional ones will be released on March 1 and are available to pre-order from the Lego website.

Although Lego has implied other sets will be released, that are also compatible with Smart Play, they haven’t announced any yet, with Star Wars seemingly chosen first because of its preponderance of memorable sounds, music, and flashing laser weaponry.
